¢ents Of Humour Is A Funny, Action-packed Book That Introduces Children To Different Types Of Currency

Penny

Penny is an anthropomorphic Canadian penny.  Penny is 8 years minted. The word “minted” is used instead of “old” for the coins as she was produced 8 years ago.

Penny is shy and feels unimportant.  This is because the penny has been discontinued.   Penny also likes the environment.  She wears that symbol of maple leaves on her head similar to the maple leaves that are embossed on the penny and the fact that she cannot grow hair like her mother.  Her love for the earth is represented when she gives the peace sign as her gesture.

In the book, Penny makes 2 friends that are also pennies (Maple and Leaf) and she joins the 1% Club.

Nico

Nico is an anthropomorphic Canadian nickel.  Nico is ten years minted.  Nico is always busy inventing things and always getting hurt.  His gesture is to give high fives.  That is his favourite number for obvious reasons!

Nico would be busy and active and industrious like the beaver which is embossed on the Canadian nickel.  He wears a beaver hat (not approved by his sister Penny) that he got from his grandfather Lyon Lydian.  The Lydian Lion is the oldest coin in the world.

Diamond

Diamond is an anthropomorphic Canadian dime.  Diamond is thirteen years minted.  Ze is proud, has a calm demeanor and is confident in hirself.

As the Bluenose Schooner is depicted on the dime face, Diamond’s connection would be that ze is a sailor and loves to race like the Bluenose.  Hir tiny build makes hir quick on the boat. Diamond also wears diamonds in hir hair and loves to sing aloud.

Quartz

Quartz is an anthropomorphic Canadian quarter.  Quartz is sixteen years minted.  Like the quarter, Quartz is very popular and is becoming a social media influencer.

As the quarter is used for coin flips and many games, Quartz too has these abilities as a gymnast and wears ballet shoes so she can spin.

LooAnny

LooAnny is an anthropomorphic Canadian dollar coin.  She is the mother of Penny and Nico and the wife of Tony.

Like the loon that is on the face of the Canadian dollar coin, LooAnny has characteristics that are similar like small red eyes and a pointy nose.  She is not able to grow hair so she dons many wigs that align with her mood.  She can be a bit nosy and noisy but also looks out for her family.

Tony

Tony is an anthropomorphic Canadian two dollar coin.  He is the father of Diamond and Quartz and the husband of LooAnny.

Tony is a gentle man who everyone adores.  He is the representative of Canadian Coins in the book.  He  loves ice fishing and anything winter related and Canadian like the Crazy Canucks!  He has white hair and looks like the polar bear that is on the face of the two dollar coin.

DOGE

Doge is the Coin family’s dog.  Doge is a form of cryptocurrency.  He was given to Tony from his friend Ether, whom he met through work.

Doge’s favourite food is strawberries.  He is always running off to somewhere and gets lost when the Coin family arrives at their new home in Moneyville.   Doge is very intelligent and is also hiding a secret from the Coin Family.

The Fake Brothers

Jake is an anthropomorphic Canadian banknote – $10.  Blake is an anthropomorphic Canadian banknote – $20.  They both wear black attire and have a black moustache and goatee. Jake believes he is a mastermind of schemes but nothing ever goes right.  He wants to create chaos in the World of Currency.  His brother Blake looks up to Jake and always goes along with his schemes.  Their other brother Quake,  an anthropomorphic Canadian banknote – $50, wants nothing to do with them and Jake’s crazy schemes.  The Fake brothers have the ability to change their appearance into any banknote denomination. Jake knows something is going on behind the World of Currency with cryptocurrency and Doge and he is going to find out!

About the Author

Behind The Book

As a young child, Carole Horton always liked the feel of coins. $he would rub her thumb across their surface and wonder where they had been. When she was about three years old, her older sister convinced her to trade all of her shiny coins for all of her sister’s darker ones. Carole traded her nickels, dimes and quarters for more of her sister’s pennies—and had no idea she was giving away more than she was getting!

In "₵ents of Humour", Penny one of the main characters, was conceived when the Author was building a wall mural made of pennies. $ince Canadian pennies are no longer made, it is more difficult to find them to build more penny walls.  The book provided an opportunity to have these discussions and seek them out. The Author will provide updates on the pennies received on the website.

For every Canadian penny collected, Carole will be donating cash at a rate of three cents per penny,  considering that's how much they would cost to make these days. The collection campaign will go until December 25, 2023 and money will be donated to local charities to help families in need. $he is considering an annual campaign - Penny's Campaign to collect spare change in order to create change.

Yes, Carole has started writing subsequent books to continue the story of the Coin family. $he is collaborating with someone to translate the book into French. Her dream would be to make Cents of Humour into a cartoon that will make financial literacy fun for kids. You can stay updated about these plans through the blogs and updates on the website.

The story opens discussions about debit, credit, crypto, inflation and counterfeiting.

Parents can read along with their kids and discuss some terms of currency, ways how money was and is used, and the fact that Canadian pennies are no longer minted because they cost more than a penny to make.
